The proceeds of 570,000 baht generated at FERC’s 7th Annual Benefit Gala, along with other donations, contributed to implementing and completing several important projects in 2006. Primary School at Muang KeudIn the small village of Muang Keud, FERC sponsored the construction of a dormitory near a primary school, providing mattress, toilets, showers and a small canteen with kitchen equipment. Water purification equipment and an electricity generator were also installed. Total costs were 332,000 baht. This school provides education for five other villages within a 12 kilometer radius.
The property surrounding this village school was small, and there was no room to build a dormitory for the children who lived too far from the main village. The cost of transportation, 400 baht per child, was not affordable for many of Lisu, Lahu and Akha families living in the region. District officials told FERC of the problems of providing an education for many of these children. A private owner contributed a piece of land near the school, funds were contributed by FERC, and the volunteer work was done by the director, teachers of the school, and many of the parents, who accomplished the building of these facilities in two months. Supervising the construction was the Dutch Foundation SAMSARA.
The official opening took place on 31 May, attended by Buddhist monks for inauguration ceremonies, the director and teachers, all the volunteers and board members of FERC.
Dances were performed by the children, and everyone enjoyed a delightful lunch afterwards. Now, at least 40 children will be given the opportunity of an education for the first time. Other Activities in 2006Additionally, FERC donated 100,000 baht to provide books and educational supplies at four schools for hill tribe children, 80,000 baht in scholarships for needy children in Hang Dong school district, and 100,000 baht for a gym roof at the Phonsawan Child Development Center.
Thank You Chiang Mai!FERC would like to thank all the Chiang Mai residents and their guests who contributed to the Gala as well as individual contributors who enabled FERC to provide educational facilities and needs for so many disadvantaged children.
