With the funds raised at the Eighth Benefit Gala, FERC was able to make a significant contribution to the lives of children who would otherwise have been at high risk of being drawn into illicit drug use and dealing or exploitation by pedophiles, sex tourists and human traffickers. Education is one of the primary preventive tools in protecting children and preparing them for a positive future. FERC also donated to the scholarship program with these funds. Baan Ponsawan Child Development CenterBaan Ponsawan Child Development Center assists impoverished hill tribe and other ethnic minority children to learn life skills and obtain a basic education in a protective and nurturing residential environment. With the FERC donation 129,800 baht phase two of a sustainable project in which a large vegetable garden will be built, and children will be taught the skills necessary to grow high quality organic produce. FERC donated an amount of 135,000 baht to provide educational equipment and supplies to the 180 children enrolled in its non-formal education program. Part of the project concentrates on migrant Shan youth who are at risk of sexual exploitation or drug trafficking because of lack of other employment opportunities. The FERC donation of 56,000 baht will be used for non-formal education for refugee children. The FERC donation of 45,000 baht will be used to buy educational supplies for children, aged 1 to 4 years, whose parents work in local factories and who otherwise had stay at home alone. The Link ProjectThe LINK Project is a Japanese-initiated project that works to provide linkages between the forest and water and the people who use them in an effort to increase the quality of life of remote tribal people and their children. It was developed to prevent the children from these regions from continued victimization in the human trafficking and drug trades. FERC donated a one time gift in the amount of 50,000 baht.
